There has been a food shortage around the world,
affecting a number of countries including Cameroon, Egypt, and
Pakistan. It is not just a lack of cash to buy food, but an
actual lack of food itself. This has created food riots in some
places, but perhaps the worst the world has seen has been
in Haiti this past spring. Protesters have attacked the
presidential palace and the UN food depots, where food is kept
for the upcoming hurricane season. People have made mud cakes,
or mud cookies to eat. This is essentially clay mixed with oil
and sugar. It makes the stomach settle down.
Added to this, Haiti has been hit by one
hurricane after another and by severe flooding, which has wiped
out any crops they had hoped to harvest this winter.
